Ered Mithrin
Battle of Five Armies & The Third Age of Middle-Earth
All of our adventures & campaigns will take place during the Third Age of Middle-earth.
Inspired By J.R.R. Tolkien & Peter Jackson

The Ered Mithrin, or Grey Mountains, rise across the northern reaches of Middle-earth, forming a rugged barrier beyond Mirkwood and northwest of Erebor. Their western heights meet the Misty Mountains near Mount Gundabad, while their eastern ridges divide around the dreaded Withered Heath. Beyond their northern slopes stretch the cold expanses of the Northern Waste.

Viewed from the south, the mountains form an imposing wall of grey stone, their jagged summits disappearing into low clouds while narrow valleys lead into the lonely highlands. Dark fir woods cover the sheltered lower slopes, thinning into thorny scrub and rough grass beneath the bare heights. Cold streams descend through steep ravines, cutting between boulders and weathered cliffs before flowing toward the lands below.

Summer briefly opens the higher passes, though sudden storms can hide a trail and turn an exposed crossing treacherous within minutes. In winter, deep snow chokes the valleys, ice grips the watercourses, and bitter winds sweep through the mountain clefts. Even in fair weather, loose scree, steep gradients, and the scarcity of shelter make travel slow and demanding. The Grey Mountains were once an important home of Durin’s Folk, who established mines and halls amid their rich deposits of ore. Their prosperity drew dragons from the far North, bringing destruction to settlements that had endured for generations. In T.A. 2589, a great cold-drake slew King Dáin I and his son Frór at the doors of their hall, and the following year many surviving Dwarves departed for Erebor and the Iron Hills. By T.A. 3011, more than four centuries have passed since that flight, yet a remnant of the Dwarves remains in the range. Abandoned workings and forgotten entrances bear witness to the wealth and labour of those earlier days. Seventy years after the Battle of Five Armies, the Ered Mithrin remain remote and perilous.

Although that battle greatly reduced the northern Orcs, the mountains contain countless caves and deep places where enemies may find refuge, while the Withered Heath retains its ancient association with dragons. Isolated Dwarven communities cling to the workings they can defend, surrounded by wilderness and the remnants of lost strongholds. Beneath the silence of the peaks lie old treasures, buried roads, and halls whose histories survive only in ancestral memory. At nightfall, when the valleys darken and the last light fades from the snow, the Grey Mountains seem to withdraw from the world into a vast and watchful stillness.
